Berlin declined to confirm the possibility of a meeting between Putin and Scholz in January

The German cabinet has refused to confirm the possibility of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in January, government spokesman Steffen Hebeschright told a briefing in Berlin.

"We are informing about possible meetings of the chancellor, as usual, in a timely manner, I have nothing to report on this at the moment," government spokesman Steffen Hebeshright said in response to a question from RIA Novosti.

Earlier, BILD announced that a meeting between the two leaders is planned for the next few weeks. Scholz would like to take an active part in Russia's policy. According to a source who requested anonymity, the chancellor hopes for "new quality relations" with Moscow. However, the German Foreign Ministry is headed by the "green" Anna Burbock, who made several harsh statements against Russia after her appointment in early December.
