The President of the European Parliament, the Italian David Sasoli, has been hospitalized in his homeland since December 26, writes the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero, referring to a political representative.
As explained, hospitalization was necessary due to "severe complications associated with impaired immune function." All planned events with the participation of the President of the EP have been canceled, ANSA agency clarifies.
In December, 65-year-old Sasoli, a former journalist with the Italian Democratic Party, said he would not run for re-election as president, "so as not to split the European majority", he said. Sassoli was elected to office in July 2019 for two and a half years.
