Greece will raise the minimum wage for the second time later this year, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday as rising inflation affects consumer incomes, Kathimerini reported.
The government has increased the monthly gross minimum wage by about 2% to 663 euros this month.
A second increase will be introduced on May 1, Mitsotakis told Antenna TV.
"I estimate that the increase in the minimum wage will be significant, it will be much higher than the 2% increase," Mitsotakis said.
Rising global energy costs were the main driver of inflation, which accelerated to 5.1% in December, its highest level in 11 years, according to the Greek statistical service ELSTAT.
"We believe that this disruption (with energy prices) will be more intense in the first three months of 2022, before it subsides," Mitsotakis said.
The government has spent about 1.35 billion euros in subsidies to help households and businesses with growing electricity and gas bills since September. Last week, he extended the financial relief until January at an additional cost of about 400m euros.
