New environmental protests in Serbia

The Association of Environmental Organizations of Serbia organized new blockades across the country on Saturday in protest of lithium mining and Rio Tinto's Yadar project. According to a Macedonian News Agency (MIA) correspondent, there were minor accidents in Belgrade near the Sava Center and in Novi Sad near the Belgrade-Subotic highway, as some drivers whose vehicles were stopped due to the blockade tried to they talk verbally, and some even physically, with the protesters, informs the Macedonian edition of Radio Free Europe.

The organizers of the blockade announced the radicalization of the protests for next week. Serbian Prime Minister Ana Bernabic said earlier on Saturday that the country's government was close to deciding to revoke everything related to Rio Tinto and revoke all permits given to the company.

Massive blockades on dissatisfaction with the Rio Tinto project were staged in Serbia in November and December, as well as controversial land expropriation and referendum laws, after which the expropriation law was repealed.
