The Lithuanian president wants the state of emergency on the border with Belarus lifted

The situation with illegal migration has been resolved, so it is worth discussing the lifting of the state of emergency imposed on the border with Belarus in connection with the migration crisis, said Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on local radio station Ziniu Radijas.

"In the current situation, it would be prudent to consider lifting the state of emergency. This is a powerful tool used in critical circumstances, "said the Lithuanian leader.

According to Nauseda, Vilnius has tackled the challenges of the migration crisis. "The problem with migrants has been resolved. If it gets complicated again, we will be able to return to a state of emergency," the president said.

The state of emergency declared by the decision of the Seimas in connection with the aggravation of the situation with illegal migration entered into force on November 10, 2021 and ends, if not extended, on January 15. It is in force in the border area and at a distance of 5 km from it in the territory of Lithuania, as well as in places where illegal migrants from Asian and African countries have entered the republic through Belarus. Entering the emergency zones is possible only with special passes (does not apply to local residents), meetings are prohibited. Illegal migrants in reception centers cannot use electronic communications and the Internet, with the exception of appeals to official bodies.
