The Greek Ornithological Society has condemned plans to increase the number of wind turbines in the Akarnan Mountains in western Greece, the country's most important breeding ground for vultures, according to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
Last month, the regional unit of western Greece issued six licenses for category B wind farms (less than 10 megawatts).
"All six are located in an important area for birds and within walking distance of the Natura area. The Akarnan Mountains are home to the largest colony of vultures (endangered in mainland Greece) and more than 60 individuals have been registered between October and May, the organization said in a statement.
"That is why this area is crucial for the survival of the species. There are already 12 wind turbines there, while dozens more are being planned without comprehensive planning, "Apostolis Calcis told Kathimerini on behalf of the NGO.
