Any enlargement of NATO worries Russia

NATO is an instrument of confrontation, so Russia is concerned about any expansion of this alliance. This was stated to journalists on Wednesday by the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov, answering the question whether the Russian Federation is worried about the possible accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, TASS reports.

"Of course, any enlargement of NATO worries Russia. "NATO is not a development institution, NATO is an instrument of confrontation," Peskov stressed.

Russia is not negotiating security and security guarantees with the United States and NATO, and there is no room for ultimatums, the Kremlin spokesman said.

"It's just that the situation has reached such a critical point in terms of European security and the national interests of our country, which are an integral part of Europe and the architecture of European security, that we cannot, unfortunately, hesitate. "Furthermore, we must specifically address these concerns that have been expressed," Peskov explained.

The Russian Federation would not want to "pour out threats and ultimatums", like US officials, amid ongoing talks with NATO and the United States.

"Like American officials, we would not want to bombard with threats, ultimatums, predict a high price, who will pay what. <...> If we negotiate, we lead them culturally, we are open to this dialogue, our diplomats have preserved diplomatic traditions despite the difficult situation. "We still prefer to talk first and then evaluate and make predictions," the Kremlin spokesman said.

According to Peskov, Russia would like to negotiate with NATO and the United States first and then make assessments.
