Germany has spoken out against the inclusion of nuclear energy and natural gas in the list of green technologies

German Environment Minister Steffi Lemke has criticized the European Commission's intention to classify nuclear energy and natural gas as sustainable green technologies, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports.

"I believe that the European Commission's intention to include nuclear energy in the category of sustainable economic activity is wrong," Lemke said. She said the technology, which could lead to a major catastrophe, as well as the generation of radioactive waste, could not be sustainable. Lemke's position was backed by Germany's new economy minister, Robert Habeck, as well as Austrian Environment Minister Leonora Gevesler, who threatened to file a formal complaint if the European Commission did not withdraw its decision. Nuclear energy and natural gas are energy sources that damage the climate, "destroying the future of our children," Gevesler said.

As the newspaper notes, there is no consensus among EU countries on the issue of nuclear energy. For France, nuclear power plants are a key element in avoiding carbon dioxide emissions: Germany, on the other hand, is abandoning nuclear power plants, viewing gas-fired power plants as a transition technology. Frankfurter Allgemeine writes that the bill of the European Commission can be rejected only by a qualified majority, ie at least 15 EU countries must vote against.
