38 million refugees as a result of US wars since September 11

The Watson Institute at the world-famous Brown University estimates that 38 million people have become refugees from their countries as a result of the US wars since the September 11, 2001 attacks. "This is more than refugees from any other war in the twentieth century, with the exception of World War II. Although America has taken in hundreds of thousands of refugees, most have taken refuge in Middle Eastern countries.

This report uses the latest data to update the 2020 estimate of the number of people who have fled their homes in the eight biggest wars the United States has fought since 2001: Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, the Philippines, Libya. and Syria. In 2021, there are about one million more displaced people than a year earlier.

Syria has the largest number of refugees - 5.9 million. Afghanistan follows with 5.9 million. Yemen has 4.6 million, Somalia 4.3 million, Pakistan 3.7 million, the Philippines 1.8 million and Libya 1.2 million.

It is based on UN data, US documents and information from open sources.

At the same time, the report itself states that 38 million is a very conservative estimate, and in fact the figure could range from 49 million to 60 million, which is actually in line with World War II figures.

Of the 38,000,000 displaced people 20 years ago, 26.7 million were able to return to the countries from which they fled, but not necessarily to their old home or town.
