Greek police cleared the basement of the University of Thessaloniki of anarchists after 34 years

A large basement at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, was vacated by Greek police on Friday after serving as a refuge and hiding place for self-proclaimed anarchists for 34 years, according to the online edition of the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.

The police operation, which began early Friday morning and lasted several hours, found dozens of wooden handles and countertops used to make banners for protests, homemade hammers, a bag of stones and an undisclosed amount of money.

The action was ordered after about 30 hooded youths stormed the university's administrative offices earlier this month and painted slogans in defense of their occupied premises, as well as messages threatening academic authorities if they move forward with plans to reclaim them.

The university plans to use the vacated space to create a 1.3m-euro library for the Faculty of Science, which will serve 5,000 undergraduate and doctoral students and 350 faculty members.
