In Greece, coffee is becoming more expensive due to a fee on plastic packaging

Due to the introduction of a special environmental tax, which takes effect today, coffee and all other beverages sold in plastic packaging in Greece will rise by about ten cents, according to a Macedonian News Agency (MIA) correspondent. Athens, quoted by the Skopje newspaper Sloboden Pechat.

For each disposable plastic product, such as cups, lids for cups, boxes, etc., an additional tax of four cents plus VAT is provided. This affects beverages and food sold and transported in plastic packaging. For this, for example, coffee in a plastic cup with a disposable lid will be ten cents more expensive.

The Greek Ministry of Environment said the purpose of the tax was to "reverse the growing trend in the consumption of single-use plastic products". The special ecotax is included in the law from 2020 and comes into force on January 1, 2022.
