Russia is introducing a digital passport

Digital passports are being introduced in Russia. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko said the government had chosen the Moscow region, Moscow and Tatarstan as Russia's three pilot regions for the introduction of a digital passport. Their publication will begin in early 2023, writes the Russian newspaper "Kommersant".

The Russians will not be able to have both a digital and a paper passport, the Interior Ministry said. Upon receipt of the electronic passport, the old document will be canceled.

"A citizen cannot have two valid passports at the same time. An earlier issued passport on paper will be canceled when issuing a passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation containing an electronic information carrier, "the Ministry of Internal Affairs told TASS.

On December 21, Maksut Shadayev, head of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, said a draft decree on issuing e-passports to Russian citizens was ready and the ministry had rectified all the problems. He said the draft document was submitted to the presidential administration last week.
