The President of Kazakhstan declared national mourning on January 10

The President of Kazakhstan Kasim-Jomart Tokayev has decided to declare January 10, 2022 a day of national mourning in the republic, the Anatolian Agency reports.

The decision was made in connection with the numerous human casualties as a result of the "tragic events in a number of regions of the country" :.

The Kazinform news agency, citing President Berik Wali's spokesman, said the decree would be published later.

The situation in Kazakhstan escalated on January 2, when rallies began in Zhanaozen (a city in the Mangistau region in the western part of the country) against a sharp rise in liquefied petroleum gas prices. They then escalated into mass protests across the country with economic and political demands.

On January 5th, President Kasim-Jomart Tokayev accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Askar Mamin's government, shifting the blame for protests against rising liquefied gas prices in the country.

On Thursday, January 6, the Secretariat of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) announced the deployment of a military contingent to Kazakhstan.
