The United States has discussed with energy companies supplies to Europe in the event of a conflict between Russia and Ukraine

State Department officials have consulted with international energy companies about possible plans to supply gas to Europe in the event that existing channels are disrupted as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Reuters reported, citing US government officials.

"We held (consultations) with energy companies, <...> talked to them about issues that excited us and talked to them about a number of emergencies," the agency quoted one source as saying. At the same time, he noted that US authorities have not asked companies to increase their production volumes.

According to the agency, representatives of the US State Department were interested in where the companies can get additional volumes of gas, if necessary. In response, company officials told US diplomats that global gas supplies were limited and there was little gas available to replace large quantities supplied by Russia.

According to the data, the consultations were led by Senior Energy Security Adviser of the State Department Ames Haxtin. It is noted that these are, in particular, possible supply disruptions that could occur if the United States imposes sanctions on the Russian Federation due to the outbreak of conflict between Moscow and Kiev.

A source from the energy industry, in turn, told the agency that "the United States has promised to help Europe in the event of a shortage in the energy sector due to conflict or sanctions." "Ames (Hoxtin) is talking to major liquefied natural gas companies and countries like Qatar to see if they can help the United States," he added.
