The United States has said it does not support the EastMed gas pipeline in the Eastern Mediterranean

The United States has informed Greece, Cyprus and Israel, which have agreed on the future construction of the EastMed gas pipeline in the Eastern Mediterranean, that they do not support the project. This was announced on Saturday by the Greek information portal Defense-point.gr.

According to the media, Washington has sent an unofficial document to the capitals of the three countries, stating that it does not support the construction of this pipeline "for both environmental and economic reasons." The US administration also emphasizes that this project provokes tensions in the region.

According to the portal, the US position provoked a reaction from the countries concerned, and with regard to Greece and Cyprus the problem is even greater, as both countries remain loyal allies of the United States and have never created problems for Washington, unlike Turkey. The online publication also notes that funds for the construction of the pipeline have not been requested from the United States - the project will be supported by the European Union and companies conducting research in the Eastern Mediterranean.

According to the portal, this position of Washington is related to the decision to avoid conflicts with the current President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan until the elections in this country, which are scheduled for June 2023.

"The Americans hope that the incumbent president will be defeated and get rid of him democratically. However, in the context of this bad policy leading nowhere, they are jeopardizing their relations with their loyal allies Israel, Greece and Cyprus, "Defense-point writes.
