The Minister of Foreign Affairs of our southern neighbor Nikos Dendias stressed that Turkey must prove its commitment to international law, starting with the withdrawal of the threat of war (casus belli) against Greece and recognizing that its maritime agreement on the border with Libya is insignificant, quotes his words in the electronic edition of the Athens daily Kathimerini.
Speaking to the press after meeting with his visiting counterpart from Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud, Dendias said Turkey could prove its commitment to international law by accepting his "very simple proposal". He made his remarks amid the recent escalation of Turkey's aggressive rhetoric against Greece, which he said "took on dimensions we have not seen in years".
"The Turkish government is committed to constantly distorting the truth and every notion of international law, including maritime law," Dendias said, stressing that Ankara has deployed the largest airborne force in the Mediterranean and "at the same time demands that we demilitarize our islands. " That would be tantamount, he said, to denying Greece a recognized right to self-defense, as enshrined in the UN Charter. Dendias described the Turkish government's attitude to the issue as "the embodiment of the absurd".
