Greek government provides significant compensation for high energy prices

Greek Environment and Energy Minister Costas Skrekas announced new measures of 395m euros on Friday to support households and businesses in January over the international energy crisis, Greece's national news agency ANA-MPA reported.

The minister developed earlier statements by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, explaining that the measures would apply to electricity and natural gas and would be funded by the Energy Transition Fund.

He announced subsidies for household electricity bills, saying basic housing would be subsidized regardless of income, size and supplier. The measure will cover 4.2 million electricity subscribers and will be distributed in such a way as to provide incentives for energy savings, with the estimated average monthly subsidy for an average household amounting to EUR 42, with the aid for households eligible for social security. housing tariff is estimated at 54 euros

There will also be subsidies for non-household consumers of electricity (agricultural, commercial, industrial, shop and others), as a horizontal subsidy of 50% of the increased cost for the entire monthly consumption.

For natural gas, the state subsidy for households will amount to 20 euros per heat megawatt-hour for the entire monthly bill and will benefit 540,000 consumers, regardless of income, housing size or supplier. An additional discount of € 20 per heat megawatt-hour will be provided by DEPA Commercial, while other suppliers will be asked to offer equivalent support.

The state subsidy will be extended to all commercial consumers and the non-residential natural gas industry in the amount of 30 euros per megawatt-hour.

Skrekas added that the situation and the amount of subsidies will be reassessed in February.
