A Russian submarine has damaged an antenna towed by a British frigate

The British Ministry of Defense made a statement that a Russian submarine in 2020 damaged an antenna towed by the British frigate HMS Northumberland. The statement of the representative of the department was quoted by The Sun.

"At the end of 2020, a Russian submarine tracked by HMS Northumberland came into contact with a tow element at its sonar station," the agency said. "The Royal Navy regularly monitors foreign ships and submarines to ensure the defense of the United Kingdom."

According to the newspaper, such an incident could be the first since the Cold War. It is said to have happened in the North Atlantic about 200 miles (over 300 km) north of the coast of Scotland. A source told The Sun that the frigate had deployed a long-range flexible sonar (GAS) against the submarine, but was forced to suspend the mission and return to port due to damage to the antenna, which was "towed along the hull of the submarine." the towed item was therefore damaged.

"The question is whether this was an accident or done on purpose," retired British Navy Commander Tom Sharp told the paper, adding that he could not rule out the latter. At the same time, another interlocutor of the publication from the British Navy said that it was almost certainly an accidental collision, which most likely damaged the Russian submarine.
