In 2021, 4,400 migrants lost their lives at sea trying to reach Spain

A total of 4,400 migrants lost their lives at sea in an attempt to reach Spain in 2021, making the year the deadliest in history. This is clear from a report by the Spanish NGO Caminando Fronteras, published earlier this week, EU Observer reports.

The death toll is a 103 percent increase over 2020. Most of those missing or dead have traveled from West Africa to the Canary Islands.
