The Greens announced their support for Frank-Walter Steinmeier in the February presidential election in Germany, the Bavarian daily Die Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported, adding that this effectively guaranteed his re-election for a second term. According to the newspaper, the party would initially nominate a woman for the highest state post.
"After much hesitation, the Greens have finally made up their minds. They will support the candidacy of Frank-Walter Steinmeier in the presidential election in Germany. This will pave the way for his re-election for a second presidential term in February, "the newspaper writes.
"Steinmeier is a very good and respected president who has made a great contribution to the development of our country during his first term," a statement from the Greens said.
The statement said: "The Greens are convinced that Steinmeier will continue to support our society and provide clear guidance on the difficult path out of the pandemic. That is why we support his re-election and recommend that our voters in the Federal Assembly re-elect Frank-Walter Steinmeier as president. " Steinmeier's first term expires on March 18, 2022, the newspaper recalls.
