Iran has called on the United Nations to hold the United States accountable for the assassination of General Kasem Suleimani

Iran calls on UN to take official action against United States over assassination of General Kasem Suleimani two years ago, Al Jazeera reports

Iran recalled that Qassem Soleimani, then commander of the Al-Quds elite forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on a diplomatic mission when his convoy was destroyed by missiles fired by American drone.

In a letter to the UN General Assembly released late Saturday, the legal department of Iran's presidential office called for "all legal initiatives in its power, including the issuance of a resolution" condemning the US government and "discouraging such moves in the future."

The letter said US governments had demonstrated "excessive one-sidedness" in their actions for years, allowing them to violate international laws and agreements.

The message comes shortly before the second anniversary of Soleimani's assassination on January 3.

Former US President Donald Trump, who ordered the assassination, said at the time that Soleimani was "the world's biggest terrorist" and "should have been eliminated a long time ago".

Iraqi Shiite commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and several others were also killed in the attack.

The UN rapporteur on extrajudicial killings in July 2020 concluded in a report that Soleimani's killing was "illegal" and "arbitrary" and in violation of the UN Charter.

Last year, Iran asked Interpol to issue "red ballots" against dozens of US officials, including Trump, who also had an arrest warrant issued by an Iraqi court.

Soleimani's assassination brought Iran and the United States to the brink of war.
