One year after the storming of the Capitol, more than 40% of Americans do not believe in the legitimacy of the election of Biden

On January 6, 2021, a mob of radical supporters of Donald Trump took over the US Capitol. The defeated former president has called into question Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election. A year after the dramatic events, American society is still deeply divided. A study by Axios and Momentive found that more than 40% of Americans do not believe in the legitimacy of Biden's election victory, reports Der Spiegel.

According to the poll, only 55% of respondents believe that the Democratic candidate came to power legally. Axios conducted a similar study a year ago. Since then, the values have remained virtually unchanged. Shortly before the Capitol took over, 58 percent of those polled said they recognized Biden as a legitimate winner in the presidential election.

Despite Biden's inauguration, the storming of the Capitol and numerous investigations exposing the former president, the poll showed that serious doubts remain among American citizens. "Unfortunately, we can see that the shocking event we all witnessed last year did not change people's perceptions," said Laura Vronsky, executive director of the Momentive Center.

The survey found that most US citizens expect events such as the storming of the Capitol to be repeated in the coming years. A crowd of radical Trump supporters stormed the Capitol a year ago when the results of the November 2020 presidential election were to be confirmed.

Earlier, Trump again accused Democrats of election fraud and called on his supporters to head to the Capitol. The storming of the Congress building, which ended in the deaths of five people, "shocked the whole world." January 6 is considered a "black day" in the history of American democracy.

About 37 percent of those polled say they have lost faith in American democracy, and 10 percent say they have never believed in the system. About 2,700 people were interviewed for the survey, which was conducted from January 1 to 5 this year, writes Der Spiegel.
