The EU is unable to impose its views on Ukraine

The European Union is not able to act as an interlocutor who could impose its point of view on the Ukrainian dossier, and this explains the absence of the EU in the Geneva talks between Russia and the United States on January 10, writes the Swiss newspaper Le Temps.

According to the publication, "it is not enough to be officially united to have a weight in the strategic world balance in 2022." "Whatever efforts the US President Biden administration makes to reassure Europeans that nothing will be done behind their backs, the diplomatic reality is in fact a balance of power," the newspaper said, adding: "Russia believes that only the head of the White House "can give the guarantees it requires." For their part, "Americans who warned Moscow on Sunday about the risk of 'confrontation' confirm that they still see themselves as the ultimate guarantors of security in the Old World."

According to Le Temps, "there is nothing unexpected in this formula." While showing sufficient security activity and gaining its "sovereignty" in early 2022, the European Union is still unable to offer a military alternative to NATO - an alliance that has been under US command since its inception in 1949. year, ”the article says. The newspaper believes that the EU, which "does not want to think of itself as a military alliance", must "learn from this inability" in the current context and, above all, "demand an urgent bilateral dialogue with Moscow, as proposed last year by France. and Germany ".  You must then secure the consent of "your natural ally, the United States" to take part in the "forthcoming discussions". Finally, the European Union must "define the future perimeter of its enlargement" and thus "the future borders that all its Member States will be ready to defend", the paper concludes.
