German foreign minister says Nord Stream 2 still does not meet EU requirements

German Foreign Minister Analena Berbok claims that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project still does not meet European Union requirements, which she said was the reason for stopping the certification process. She said this in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa.

"Our federal government has made it clear in the coalition agreement that energy projects in Germany must meet European requirements, which also applies to Nord Stream-2. But this is not the case at the moment, which is why the certification process has been stopped, "Burbock said in an interview published before her first visit to Italy.

According to her, the issue of launching Nord Stream-2 is of a geopolitical nature. The minister confirmed that the current German government shares the approach set out in the joint declaration with the United States, which states that "effective tough measures will be taken against Russia together with European partners in case Moscow uses energy as a weapon or acts aggressively against Ukraine."

The German foreign minister believes that "it is a political responsibility to provide everyone in Europe - regardless of income level - with electricity and heating." "It is therefore necessary to strengthen Europe's energy independence," she said.
