Two pilots were killed in a crash of an Israeli military helicopter near Haifa

Two pilots of the Israeli Defense Forces (Israeli army) were killed Monday night when their military helicopter crashed off the coast of northern Israel, writes the English-language edition of The Times of Israel.

A third crew member was rescued and taken to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa for treatment of moderate injuries. The hospital said he was in stable condition, was placed in the shock ward and then had to be transferred to the intensive care unit.

The Israeli army's search and rescue teams pulled the other two crew members out of the water, but were unable to rescue them.

The military says the survivor is a patrol officer. The type of helicopter that crashes usually has a crew of pilots, co-pilots and a naval officer.

The helicopter crashed in the Mediterranean Sea right next to the port city of Haifa. The accident happened close enough to the shore, so the townspeople saw flames from the shore and called the police.
