With the abandonment of the EastMed gas pipeline, the United States redrawn the energy map in the Eastern Mediterranean

Washington's intention not to support the construction of the EastMed gas pipeline is believed to have removed an element of pressure on Ankara, according to an unofficial document about three weeks ago, while forcing Nicosia to redefine its energy tactics. edition of the Kathimerini newspaper in a material presented without editorial intervention.

The US position is a manifestation of fears that have raged in previous years about the economic viability of the project. At the same time, this is also at odds with the White House's green agenda. The plan includes the construction of a 1,250-kilometer underwater pipeline to deliver gas from Israel, Egypt and Cyprus via Greece to the EU.

Instead, the United States has backed its support for the electricity link between Greece and Egypt, reaffirming its intention to treat the largest Arab country as a prime point for the transfer of clean energy to Europe.

Commenting to Kathimerini, a spokesman for the US embassy said Washington strongly supported energy integration in the Eastern Mediterranean and Greece's leading role. The official added that Ambassador Jeffrey Payet would encourage further cooperation on the 3 + 1 scheme (Greece, Israel and Cyprus plus the United States), which would provide new avenues for energy diversification.

The spokesman also said Payet had repeatedly expressed Washington's strong support for projects such as the planned electricity interconnection from Egypt to Crete and mainland Greece and the proposed Eurasia interconnector, which will connect the electricity grids of Greece, Cyprus and Europe.

In addition, in response to a question from Greek correspondents, a State Department spokesman said the United States remained committed to the 3 + 1 regional cooperation scheme and considered Europe's energy security a matter of national security.

However, the spokesman noted that Washington is focusing on clean energy technologies that will prepare the Eastern Mediterranean region for the transition to a new energy era.
