Denmark will send convicted foreigners to serve their sentences in Kosovo

Denmark will hire 300 prison places in Kosovo. In the future, the number of new places for prisoners will be increased to 1,000, the Ritzau news agency reported on Wednesday, TASS reports.

A corresponding agreement was reached between the government of the Social Democrats and the People's, Socialist People's Conservative People's Party of Denmark. "By 2025, there will be a shortage of 1,000 places in the penitentiary system. I am proud to say that through this agreement we will solve this problem together, "said Justice Minister Nick Heckerup.

Third-country nationals convicted in Denmark will serve their sentences in Kosovo. There are also plans to increase the number of places in Danish prisons. The measures for 2022-2025, determined by the inter-party agreement, include additional funding of 4 billion kroner ($ 604 million).

In the last year, the Ministry of Justice has been negotiating with Pristina on the conditions for renting places in the country's prisons. Several more meetings are expected before the signing of the contract.
