Former Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was detained by police for several hours

Former Prime Minister of Slovakia and current leader of the Social Democrats in the country Robert Fico was detained by police in Bratislava for several hours, after which he was released from the station, reports the national RTVS.

Fico, quoted by the media, linked his detention to a protest against the country's current rulers by Social Democrat activists in Bratislava on Thursday night.

"The only purpose of this ridiculous intervention [of the police] was to prevent me from participating in the car protest," the politician said. He believes that the pressure from the authorities on him is intensifying in order to intimidate and hinder political activity against the background of "the destruction of democracy in Slovakia."

Earlier, police confirmed in a Facebook post the arrest of Fico, who headed the Slovak government from 2006 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2018. The police noted that his detention was carried out at the request of the body involved in the investigation. " It follows that the leader of the Social Democrats was not detained in connection with a breach of the ban on public events during the state of emergency in Slovakia due to the coronavirus.
