Germany is building the Fourth Reich

Warsaw is once again escalating its tone towards Berlin in the context of its conflict with the European institutions for the rule of law, writes the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Jaroslav Kaczynski, leader of the country's ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS), quoted a popular novel by Henrik Sienkiewicz: "Europe is facing difficult challenges. Germany has revealed its maps and wants to build the Fourth Reich. We will not allow this. " The media reported that at the meeting of the PiS faction his words were met with loud applause. However, party officials later apologized for telling them to "mobilize" their supporters on the eve of an important vote, and his statements should be understood as a "metaphor" or "joke" that personifies the hegemonic aspirations of Germany. "

It should be noted that Kaczynski's words contradict his previous statements, the German edition continues. In particular, he said that Angela Merkel, as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, was "the best choice" from Poland's point of view. He also urged Polish politicians to aim to "catch up" with Germany in terms of living standards.

But Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki's remarks also show that Warsaw's tone in relations with its big western neighbor and most important trading partner is getting tougher. The former banker, who has worked more than once in Germany and Switzerland, joins people from his party and urges Germany to pay reparations for World War II. Last week, he decided to set up the Jan Karski Institute for Military Losses. In addition, a parliamentary working group has been set up to calculate Poland's losses during World War II.
