Omicron already dominates the United States

The Omicron variant is ahead of other Covid-19 mutations and is now the dominant variant in the United States, accounting for 73 percent of newly infected people over the weekend, according to the Associated Press.

Data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show an almost sixfold increase in the proportion of omicron in infections in just one week.

In most parts of the country, this percentage is even higher.

Omicron is responsible for about 90 percent or more of new infections in New York, the Southeast, the industrial Midwest and the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

The national rate estimates that there were more than 650,000 Omicron infections in the United States last week.

Dr Amesh Adalya, a senior scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Safety, said he was not surprised by CDC data showing that Omicron surpassed the Delta in the United States, given what was observed in South Africa, Great Britain and Denmark.

He predicts the spread of Omicron during the holidays, including penetrating infections among the vaccinated and serious complications among the unvaccinated, which could put additional pressure on hospitals already burdened by the delta mutation.
