Patriarch Kirill wants to discuss with Pope Francis the survival of Christians in the modern world

Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill wants to meet with Pope Francis. This was stated to TASS on Wednesday by the chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Hilarion Volokolamsky.

"Pope Francis has repeatedly spoken about his desire to meet with Patriarch Cyril, including him during my last and penultimate meetings with him," the bishop said. "For his part, Patriarch Cyril would also like to meet with Pope Francis, because more than five years have passed since the previous meeting, which was the first, and many new questions have accumulated."

The metropolitan said that the meeting is planned for 2022. "We have discussed specific dates and specific places, but we still can not announce them because they require further clarification on both sides," said Ilarion Volokolamsky. According to him, Pontiff and Patriarch Cyril "will not talk about some theological issues separating Orthodox and Catholics, but will talk primarily about how Christians can survive in today's world, where they face persecution, violence, risk to life."

On Wednesday morning, the pope received an audience with Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk. According to the press service of the Holy See, during the conversation, "held in the spirit of brotherhood", the parties discussed topics of interaction between the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox Churches.
