Scholz and Burbock agree to launch Nord Stream 2

German Foreign Minister Analena Burbock and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have reached an agreement on the commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. She said this in an interview with the German weekly Die Zeit.

"Although it is no secret that the Federal Chancellor [Olaf Scholz] is approaching this issue from different angles, I have also made it clear that the current approval process implements EU energy legislation," Burbock said. the question of whether the German authorities have a common position on the launch of Nord Stream 2. However, she added that the certification was recently suspended precisely because of some unresolved legal issues.

"It is in our political and economic interests not to use energy as a weapon to destabilize Europe," he said, adding that this was why the European Union had revised its gas directive. "The issue of energy security will also play a role in the further evaluation of [the project]," she concluded.

The construction of the gas pipeline was completed on September 10, 2021. In order to be launched, it must be registered with an independent transport operator. Such registration is necessary for the project to comply with the EU Gas Directive. Certification has already been suspended, as the operator Nord Stream 2 AG, based in Switzerland, has to register a subsidiary in Germany. Until this happens, certification will not continue.
