Six Middle Eastern countries stop Spielberg's West Side Story over transgender

The remake of Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story", which premiered on November 29, is not banned from broadcasting in six Middle Eastern countries, writes The Hill.

The classic musical, a remake of the 1961 film adaptation, is limited to viewing in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter, the film was largely limited by the transgender character Anybodys, who is portrayed by Iris Menas. Disney refused to make cuts to the film, which the parties requested, and the countries in turn refused to grant viewing rights.

LGBTQ + people are still heavily persecuted in areas in the Middle East, and in some places, including Saudi Arabia, same-sex sex is punishable by death, according to The Hill.

Disney has not yet commented on the topic.
