The pandemic has not affected the global arms trade - it continues to grow

Although the global economy contracted in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 100 largest defense companies on the planet can still boast of growing sales, reports the German television channel Das Erste.

According to a study by the Sipri Institute, the world's 100 largest arms manufacturers have only increased their turnover in the first year of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the tense situation in the world economy, in 2020 the concerns sold weapons and military services in the amount of 531 billion dollars (470 billion euros).

This is 1.3% more than in 2019, notes the German television channel. Compared to 2015, the increase is 17%. While economic indicators in many countries have declined due to the pandemic, sales of defense companies continue to grow for the sixth consecutive year, explained the team of the Sipri Institute.

The United States remains a leader in arms sales. Only 41 U.S. arms manufacturers are responsible for more than half of the world's arms sales in 2020. U.S. industry sales in the industry total $ 285 billion ($ 252 billion), about 2 percent more than 2019.

In second place is China with a 13% share in world arms sales, followed by Britain (7.1%). 26 European companies, according to a Sipri report, sold $ 109 billion (€ 96 billion) in arms in 2020, about one-fifth of the turnover of one hundred of the world's largest defense companies.

The four German defense companies on this list sold slightly more weapons than in 2019, worth $ 8.9 billion (7.8 billion euros). On the contrary, sales of Russian arms manufacturers are declining for the third consecutive year, notes Das Erste. Compared to 2019, they will decrease to 26.4 billion dollars or 23.4 billion euros, respectively, according to the German television channel.
