Ukrainian Academy of Sciences: Ukraine's population could halve by the end of the century - up to 22 million people

By the end of the XXI century, Ukraine's population will be halved to 22 million. Such a forecast was made by scientists from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU), reports TASS, citing a statement on the website of the department.

"By the end of the 21st century, Ukraine's population will be halved to 22 million. And we still do not see ways to stop this process, "said Alexander Gladun, deputy director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The scientist notes that there is no separate demographic policy aimed at improving the demographic situation in the country. And now, Gladun noted, most Ukrainians interviewed say they cannot afford to have two or more children, mainly for economic reasons - low wages, lack of housing and underdeveloped social infrastructure. "Women's reproductive behavior has also changed: first they study and make a career, then they start a family and have children, because otherwise they risk losing their salary and the status they have received," said the scientist.

In addition, according to him, in Ukraine there is an imbalance between the sexes in favor of women in the age group over 35 due to high mortality among men. "First, men work more in hazardous industries where the risks are higher. Second, men make up three-quarters of those killed in road accidents. Third, men commit suicide much more than women, "said the scientist.

According to the State Statistics Service, the country's population as of November 1 is just over 41.3 million. Earlier, the UN predicted that by 2050 the population of Ukraine will decrease to 35 million people.
