World food prices are rising for the fourth consecutive month

World food prices rose for the fourth month in a row, driven by strong demand for wheat and dairy products. The relevant data were published by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), reports TACC.
The FAO Food Price Index, which reflects monthly changes in international basic food prices, was 134.4 points in November, the highest level since June 2011. This value is 1.2% higher than in October.
In particular, it is noted that the prices of dairy products increased the most: the price index for this category of goods increased by 3.4% compared to the previous month. "There is a great global demand for imports of butter and milk powder," the organization's experts explained.
The FAO's cereal price index rose 3.1% in November from October and 23.2% from a year earlier. Wheat prices reached their highest level since May 2011. "Growth reflects strong demand amid limited supplies, especially high-quality wheat, while [level] prices were supported." The sugar price index rose 1.4% in November. That of the prices of vegetable oils decreased by 0.3%, and of meat - by 0.9%, the organization explains.
