A volcano erupted on the island of Java, killing and injuring dozens

The Semeru volcano on the Indonesian island of Java erupted today, killing one person and injuring at least 35, Reuters reported. People were trapped in buildings due to smoke and ash, local authorities said.

Footage from the island shows people fleeing a ball of smoke and ash approaching villages in the eastern part of the island.

Authorities initially said there were 41 injured. It was later reported that 35 people were being treated at local hospitals. Helicopters were called in to help those stranded in buildings. According to initial data, they are at least 10 people.

Reuters also reported blocked miners near sand mines, citing a local official.

There is also an evacuation of a settlement whose bridge to the city has been cut off, which means that it remains without medical care.

AirNav Indonesia said the eruption did not significantly affect flights.

Semeru is the highest part of the island of Java and is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in the region of Indonesia. It last erupted in January, but took no casualties.
