Pope Francis, who arrived on Saturday on an apostolic visit to Greece, said a united Europe was now torn apart by nationalist selfishness, the TACC quoted him as saying.
"The European community, torn by nationalist selfishness, instead of promoting solidarity, often seems frozen and uncoordinated," the pontiff said, speaking to Greek leaders, civil society and the diplomatic corps.
"If once ideological contradictions prevented the construction of bridges between the West and the East on (our) continent, today the problem of migration has created a gap between the South and the North," Francis added.
