The tornado struck several US states and killed at least 79 people, CNN reports.
The highest number of victims, 70, was reported in the state of Kentucky, which bore the brunt of the disaster. At the same time, the death toll could rise to 100, Governor Andy Beshir warned. In Arkansas and Tennessee, authorities have reported three deaths in each of those states, in Illinois the disaster claimed the lives of two locals and killed an 84-year-old woman in Missouri.
The worst damage was to the 10,000-strong city of Mayfield, where the roof of a candle factory collapsed, a police station and a fire station were destroyed. "People don't know where to sleep today, where they will go to work on Monday morning. This is a truly devastating situation, "Mayor Katie Stuart O'Nan told CNN. "<...> About 100 people worked in the factory, this is the busiest period due to the upcoming holidays." According to her, the administrative complex was also destroyed.
Power outages caused by the tornado affected more than 200,000 people in Tennessee and Kentucky.
