An agreement between Paris and Athens to supply three frigates to the Greek navy has recently been confirmed and there is no risk of it being annulled due to a similar proposal by the United States, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces said, quoted by AFP.
"Since we started negotiations with the Greek side, the American proposal is no longer being considered. Moreover, the fact that we signed an agreement was initialed a few days ago," the agency quoted a ministry statement as saying. According to AFP, the Greek Ministry of Defense has also confirmed that the agreement has entered into force and will be implemented.
The announcement comes amid the Pentagon's announcement Friday of the US administration's decision to sell new multi-purpose ships to Greece, as well as to modernize the soft-frigate frigates already in service with the Greek navy. Greece has reportedly requested the purchase of four new US ships and related weapons and equipment. The amount of this contract should be 6.9 billion dollars.
