Friedrich Merz heads the CDU

The German Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Angela Merkel's party, will be led by Friedrich Merz next year, who is known as the leader of its conservative wing, according to the European edition of Politico.

Merz, a 66-year-old member of the Bundestag and former MEP, managed his third attempt to secure the party's leadership after being defeated by Annegret Kramp-Karenbauer in 2018 and Armin Lashet earlier this year.

Laschet has announced he will step down after the defeat in the September general election, which ended Merkel's 16-year rule under the Merkel.

"We have a mission here in Berlin in opposition," Merz said after the results of the vote were announced on Friday afternoon. The HDZ is the largest opposition party in the Bundestag.

Between December 4 and 16, nearly 250,000 of the 400,000 members of the CDU voted for their preferred party leader, facing a choice between Merz and two other centrist candidates, foreign policy expert Norbert Rötgen and Helge Braun, who was head of the office. Merkel.

Merz won by a very large margin, receiving 62.1 percent of the vote, while Rötgen came in second with 25.8 percent and Brown received 12.1 percent.

The vote is due to be confirmed by 1,001 delegates at a party conference on January 21 and 22, but this is expected to be a simple formality.
