Germany has no intention of becoming a nuclear power

Germany has no plans to become a nuclear power, but it will maintain its involvement in securing NATO's "nuclear umbrella" - and there is no contradiction. This was emphasized by the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany Analena Berbi at the conference on disarmament in Stockholm, DPA reports.

"The goal for all of us is a world without nuclear weapons," said the "green" politician. According to Burbock, Germany "intends to contribute to this as a country that has never been a nuclear power and never wants to become a nuclear power."

Burbock, during talks with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, emphasized that "it does not in any way call into question NATO membership or [Germany's] commitment to providing a nuclear umbrella." This issue cannot be divided into black and white, "the minister said.

Under the treaty of 15 March 1991, Germany renounced its own production, possession and disposal of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. By the end of June 1991, the USSR was withdrawing all military nuclear components from the territory of the former GDR.

However, US nuclear weapons remain in the country as part of NATO's strategic concept of intimidating potential adversaries. Up to 20 US nuclear warheads are reportedly at an air base near Buchel.
