Seven people have died in a car crash with migrants in Hungary

Seven people were killed and four others were injured when a car with Serbian license plates carrying migrants crashed into a house in Hungary late Monday after the driver refused to stop for inspection, Reuters reports.

The driver of the vehicle noticed that the police were checking cars in the town of Morahalom near the Serbian border and tried to avoid it by driving away at excessive speed, the police told MTI on Tuesday.

The car, which was transporting 10 migrants and was moving towards the city of Szeged, then crashed into a house and overturned.

Police say the driver, who was also injured, has been detained and will be charged with trafficking in human beings and causing a fatal accident.

The incident happened near the border of the European Union member Hungary with Serbia, which is not part of the Bloc. Prime Minister Victor Orban's government built a fence in 2015 at the height of the migrant crisis, when hundreds of thousands moved from there to Western Europe.

Orbán's tough anti-immigration stance has helped his conservative Fidesz party win the 2018 election. Last week, 2,419 migrants were stopped at Hungary's borders, police said.
