Germany must try to reach an understanding with Russia in the framework of EU policy

Germany is ready for a constructive dialogue with Russia and must try to find understanding in its relations with it, but within the framework of a common European foreign policy. This was stated on Wednesday by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, speaking with the first statement of the government in the Bundestag,  reports.

He said Berlin was "ready for a constructive dialogue". "In view of our history, this also applies to our country's relations with Russia. "We are the ones who must be more and more ready to try to find understanding, to try to get out of the spiral of escalation - as has been happening in the Normandy process lately," he said.

"However, this should not be misunderstood as German 'eastern policy.' "In a united Europe, 'Eastern policy must be only European,'" he added.

Scholz also said that the West is very concerned about the situation on the Ukrainian border. According to him, this topic will be discussed at the EU summit. "It is important that we take the same position with our partners in the EU and overseas," the chancellor said. He added that "any border violation will be costly".
