Iran may already be producing its own nuclear fuel

Iran can produce nuclear fuel on its own and expects to use it at its Bushehr nuclear power plant in the near future, Iranian Vice President and head of the Atomic Energy Organization (AOEI) Mohammad Eslami told RIA Novosti.

"Iran can now produce nuclear fuel on its own. We have held talks with Rosatom and we hope that within the framework of our cooperation and on the basis of the plans and contracts we will conclude with this company, we will be able to start using Iranian fuel in the reactor at Bushehr NPP, "said Eslami.

The construction of power units at Bushehr is considered to be the largest Russian-Iranian project. The first unit of the nuclear power plant, completed with the participation of the Russian Federation, was connected to the national energy system of Iran in September 2011. The construction of the second unit is underway and a contract has been signed for the construction of a third unit. In addition, Moscow is supplying Tehran with the nuclear fuel needed to operate the unit's first reactor. The last delivery of Russian fuel was on April 29, 2020.
