Electricity regime introduced in Kosovo

The Kosovo government has decided to introduce a power regime for up to 60 days. This decision comes after 10 years in which there were no such restrictions in the country, informs the macedonian "Focus".

These are planned restrictions lasting two hours twice a day.

Kosovo's electricity distribution system operator KEDS is applying restrictions due to rising consumption, low levels of domestic production, high import prices and the problems caused by this imbalance in the transmission network.

The two coal-fired power plants there have not been operating recently, which has further contributed to the difficult situation.

It is envisaged to introduce restrictions on the supply of electricity to consumers and impose special obligations on energy companies.

The last word on the energy emergency will be in parliament, which may decide to extend this period by another 30 days.

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said Kosovo could not buy electricity earlier and avoid the energy crisis because electricity, he said, is not a commodity that can be stored in a refrigerator.

Residents of Pristina's Veternik district protested in the Kosovo capital, announcing they would also block a highway because they were left without electricity and heating in their homes.
