The amount of Omicron in Thessaloniki's city sewer is growing

Thessaloniki wastewater analysis confirmed on Friday an increase in the Community's SARS-CoV-2 version of Omicron, based on the latest measurements from a study conducted by Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, the Greek national news agency ANA- MPA.

Since the variant was first discovered in the city sewer on 19 December, there has been an increase in the quantities of the highly transmissible variant until 22 December, while the last five measurements show signs of an overall increase in SARS-CoV -2.

This seems to have halted the gradual decline in viral load seen in the previous three weeks since the fourth wave peaked on 25 November.

"The slow decline in the viral load in the sewers from the previous period seems to have stopped, while the levels are still high and the hospitals in the city are full. Although uncertain, averages are already showing signs of a growing trend, "University Rector Professor Nikos Papaioannou, who is in charge of the study, told the state news agency ANA-MPA.

"Given the availability of the Omicron option and the increase in movements and social contacts at Christmas, a further increase in the spread of the virus in Thessaloniki seems very likely.
