John Hopkins: COVID-19 deaths in the United States exceed 800,000

The death toll from COVID-19 in the world's most affected pandemic country, the United States, has exceeded 800,000. This is shown by the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, quoted by the French newspaper Le Figaro. It is noted that the victims of coronavirus in the country are more than the population of entire US states - such as North Dakota or Alaska. The threshold of 700,000 dead was exceeded on October 2, the publication recalls.

About 450,000 deaths were reported in the country in 2021, although vaccines began in December 2020 and became widely available in the spring of this year. The United States currently records an average of 1,150 deaths from COVID-19 per day, according to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). Most of them are unvaccinated people. About 72% of the US population has received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, less than many countries, including France.

"As we cross the symbolic cornerstone of the 800,000 Americans who died of COVID-19, we remember every person, the life they lived, and we pray for their loved ones," US President Joe Biden said in a statement. "I know what it's like to have an empty chair around the kitchen table, especially during the holiday season, and my heart breaks for every family that goes through this pain," he added.

On Tuesday night (local time), members of Congress observed a minute of silence in silence. "We will remember that 800,000 loved ones have not come this far: lost father or grandfather, mother or grandmother, friend, acquaintance in the neighborhood," Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a press release. "We all know someone who died of this disease."
