NATO will cut its military budget and increase its civilian budget

NATO plans to reduce its military budget by 3% in 2022 compared to 2021, while the organization's civilian budget will increase by almost 9%, according to a statement issued by the Alliance, RIA Novosti reported.

"NATO's civilian budget has been agreed at 289.1 million euros and the military at 1.56 billion euros ... The civilian budget includes civilian personnel costs, operational costs, and civilian program costs. This budget has increased by 8.9% compared to the level of 2021. The main factor in increasing costs is the ongoing cyber adaptation of the Alliance, "the document said.

The Alliance noted that the military budget, by contrast, would be reduced by 3%, covering the costs of command, programs, missions and operations around the world.

NATO also explained that the third part of the budget is the NATO Security Investment Program (NSIP), for which a ceiling of 790 million euros has been set for 2022.

The statement said all allies traditionally contribute to the organisation's budget in accordance with a financial formula based on each country's gross national income.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the total increase in NATO defense spending since 2014 has allowed about $ 260 billion to be added to defense spending.

In 2014, NATO pledges promised to increase defense spending to 2% of GDP in 10 years at the Wales Summit, but the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States gave a strong impetus to these efforts. During the campaign and after winning the election, Trump criticized NATO allies for not spending enough on defense.

The total military spending of NATO countries in 2020 is estimated at 1092.5 billion dollars (data as of October 2020), which is almost 61 billion dollars more than in 2019 (1031 billion dollars).

NATO's military budget for 2021 was agreed at 1.61 billion euros, up 5% from 2020.
