Most New Caledonians have rejected the independence project in this overseas territory of France. This was announced by the TV channel BFM, referring to the preliminary results of the referendum held for this purpose.
The statement said "opponents of independence won the referendum". According to the TV channel, after counting 88% of the ballots, more than 96% of voters rejected the idea of sovereignty of the archipelago.
The referendum was held for the third time in recent years in the archipelago in the southwestern Pacific. His results confirmed the results of previous such polls in 2018 and 2020. This time, the hallmark was relatively low voter turnout. According to preliminary data, almost twice fewer residents of the archipelago took part in the vote than a year ago. At that time, the turnout was 85.6%.
In October 2020, after processing 100% of the ballots, opponents of New Caledonia's independence were also in the majority, winning 53.3% of the vote.
Many pro-independence activists have announced in advance that they will not come to the polls on Sunday, citing the impossibility of organizing a proper campaign amid the pandemic. About 2,000 gendarmes and police officers observed the order during the voting.
